Strut Channel Nut
Spring-loaded channel nuts that lock into strut channel to fix cable tray, pipes and services anywhere along the run.
About the Strut Channel Nut
Strut channel nuts, or spring nuts, slide into strut channel and grip under the lips to give a bolt fixing anywhere along the run, for cable tray, pipe supports and services framing. Use long spring nuts in deep 41 x 41mm channel, short spring in shallow 41 x 21mm channel and no spring nuts in any channel height, plus a narrow M6 channel nut. They come zinc plated or hot dip galvanised from M6 to M16, or in 316 stainless from M6 to M12, in packs of 100 (50 for M16). Choose the type, thread and finish above; the guide below covers which spring to use and fitting.
Also called spring nuts, Unistrut-style channel nuts or strut nuts.

What a channel nut does
A strut channel nut is a rectangular nut that goes inside strut channel and grips under the channel's turned-in lips, giving a threaded fixing anywhere along the run. You can slide it to exactly where you need it, and serrated grooves across its top face bite into the lips once it is tightened to stop it moving or turning.
On a spring nut, a coil spring under the nut pushes it up against the lips, so it stays where you put it while you line up the fitting: Hobson calls it a third hand. Hobson lists these nuts for securing cable tray and ladder to channel, fixing channel supports to strut, and joining two lengths of channel at right angles with an angle fitting.
Hobson publishes no load rating for these nuts. They are not rated for supporting people or for structural loads; what a services support may carry has to come from the strut system's maker or the project's designer.
Long spring, short spring, no spring or narrow?
- Long spring (38mm spring, 40mm on the 316 M12): for deep channel, 41 x 41mm.
- Short spring (19mm spring): for shallow channel, 41 x 21mm.
- No spring: fits all channel heights, for jobs where the nut does not need to be held in place, such as dropping it inside the channel to fix accessories or brackets.
- Narrow channel nut (M6, no spring): 13.5mm wide, also known as a butterfly nut. A low profile nut that secures items to all channel sections where a standard channel nut is too wide. Hobson lists it as light duty, used with metal threads, for plumbing and electrical work.
Channel nut sizes: M6, M8, M10, M12 and M16
Every strut channel nut we carry. The thread is the bolt or threaded rod it takes: an M10 channel nut takes M10 rod. All are metric coarse thread. Select a row to open that nut in the selector.
Every strut channel nut we carry, smallest to largest within each type. Dimensions are width A x length B x thickness C in mm, and spring length L, from Hobson's Did You Know sheets for each type and finish; Hobson's 316 long spring sheet covers M10 and M12 only. A blank cell means no figure we can confirm. Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Zinc plated, galvanised or 316 stainless channel nuts?
From Hobson's finish comparison and stainless steel guidance:
- Zinc plated: a 5 micron zinc coating, recommended for indoor and non-corrosive conditions. Hobson lists the zinc plated narrow nut as for indoor use.
- Hot dip galvanised: a 50 micron coating with high corrosion resistance, recommended for long term outdoor work.
- 316 stainless: stainless with molybdenum added for better resistance near the sea. Neither 304 nor 316 is made to sit in seawater, and even 316 can visibly corrode where salt spray is left to build up. We carry 316 in M10 and M12 in all three spring types, and M6 and M8 in long spring.
How to fit a channel nut
- Choose the nut for the channel depth (long spring for 41 x 41, short spring for 41 x 21, no spring for any depth) and the thread of your rod or bolt.
- Push the nut into the open face of the channel with the spring underneath, then turn it a quarter turn so its ends sit under the lips with the grooves facing up.
- Slide it along to where you need it. A spring nut stays put; hold a no spring nut in place.
- Put the fitting or bracket over the channel, run the bolt or threaded rod through it into the nut, and tighten so the grooves bite into the lips.

Questions
What is a spring nut for strut channel?
A channel nut with a coil spring underneath. The spring holds the nut up against the channel lips so it stays where you put it while you fit the bolt or rod, and serrated grooves on top stop it moving once tightened.
Long spring or short spring channel nut?
Long spring (38mm spring, 40mm on the 316 M12) for deep 41 x 41mm channel; short spring (19mm spring) for shallow 41 x 21mm channel. A no spring nut fits all channel heights.
Do you have M8 channel nuts (and M10)?
Yes. M8 and M10 come in long spring, short spring and no spring, zinc plated or hot dip galvanised. M10 also comes in 316 stainless in all three types, and M8 in 316 long spring.
Are these Unistrut nuts?
They are Unistrut-style strut channel nuts from Hobson, for 41 x 41mm and 41 x 21mm channel, not Unistrut brand. Check the dimensions in the table against your channel.
What is a narrow channel nut?
An M6 nut 13.5mm wide with no spring, also called a butterfly nut. It secures items to all channel sections where a standard channel nut is too wide, for light duty plumbing and electrical work.
How much weight can a channel nut hold?
Hobson publishes no load rating for these channel nuts. Get the load for a services support from the strut system's maker or your designer.
How are channel nuts sold?
In packs of 100, except M16 in packs of 50.
