About the Hanger & Mounting Plate

Threaded rod hanging hardware for services, used to hang pipes, ventilation and air conditioning ducts, sprinklers and cable tray from steel beams, ceilings and walls. Zinc plated beam clamp hangers (M10 and M12) grip steel I-beam flanges; clevis hangers come hot dip galvanised (M10, M12, M16) or as a zinc plated light duty M10; and zinc plated mounting plates have a centre, horizontal or vertical nut (M10 and M12) or a centre bolt (M10). Hobson publishes no load ratings for these parts. Choose the type and thread above; the guide below covers fitting and finishes.

Also called beam clamp hangers, girder clamps or allthread mounting plates.

Features

  • Beam clamp hangers, zinc plated, M10 and M12
  • Clevis hangers, hot dip galvanised mild steel, M10, M12 and M16
  • Light duty clevis hanger, zinc plated, M10
  • Mounting plates, zinc plated mild steel: centre bolt (M10), centre nut, horizontal nut and vertical nut (M10 and M12)

Applications

  • Hanging rod from steel beams (beam clamps)
  • Pipe hangers and supports (clevis hangers)
  • Ventilation, air conditioning and sprinkler services
  • Mounting rod to ceilings and walls

Beam clamps, clevis hangers and mounting plates: what each does

  • Beam clamp hanger: a zinc plated cast iron clamp that grips the flange of a steel I-beam, with a drilled hole for M10 or M12 threaded rod. Hobson lists it for straight and tapered I-beam flanges and multiple flange thicknesses, with a lock nut on the clamping bolt to stop it loosening, and a rod hole that is drilled rather than threaded for faster installation. Listed uses: heating, sprinkler systems, acoustic systems, ventilation and air conditioning, electrical, piping and sanitation fittings, and engineering and steel structures. Hobson publishes no rating for it; sprinkler supports must be listed or approved for that system.
  • Mounting plate, centre nut: a 100 x 25mm plate with a threaded boss in the middle, for suspending or supporting threaded rod at right angles to a wall or ceiling. It fixes straight to strut, purlins and cable tray, and Hobson also lists it as a footing in concrete with threaded rod to support pipes.
  • Mounting plate, horizontal nut: the threaded boss sits along the plate, for suspending or supporting rod parallel to a vertical or horizontal surface.
  • Mounting plate, vertical nut: for suspending rod parallel to a vertical surface, running vertically.
  • Mounting plate, centre bolt: an M10 stud on the plate, for mounting pipe clamps and fittings from a wall or ceiling.
  • Clevis hanger: a cranked flat bracket with a rod hole at the top and a fixing hole in the foot, listed by Hobson in its cable tray support range. Hot dip galvanised in M10, M12 and M16 (5 to 6mm thick), and a 3mm zinc plated light duty M10. Hobson publishes no data sheet for the clevis hangers beyond their dimensions.

Sizes and dimensions

Every hanger and mounting plate we carry, with the main dimensions from Hobson's Did You Know sheets and dimension tables. The size is the threaded rod it takes. Select a row to open it in the selector.

All dimensions in mm, lettered as on Hobson's drawings. Beam clamp: G is the jaw opening (the clamping bolt reaches into it, and Hobson publishes no maximum flange thickness), A how far the jaw reaches over the flange. Clevis hanger: D is the rod hole, A the height from the base to the hole centre, L the foot length. Mounting plates: plate length x width x thickness; slots are length x width; D and H are the nut boss diameter and height. Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

How to fit a beam clamp hanger

  1. Choose the clamp for the rod: M10 or M12. Check the flange fits the jaw: the opening is 20mm on the M10 clamp and 26mm on the M12, but the clamping bolt reaches into that opening and Hobson publishes no maximum flange thickness, so try the clamp on the flange or send us the flange size.
  2. Slide the jaw over the edge of the beam flange. It suits straight and tapered I-beam flanges.
  3. Tighten the M10 clamping bolt (17mm hex) onto the flange, then run the lock nut down against the clamp body so the bolt cannot loosen.
  4. Pass the threaded rod through the rod hole and fix it with nuts and washers as the services design specifies.

How to fix a mounting plate

  1. Pick the plate for the rod direction: centre nut for rod at right angles to the surface, horizontal nut for rod parallel to the surface, vertical nut for rod running down a wall, centre bolt for a fixed M10 stud.
  2. Fix the plate through its two 10 x 7mm slots with 14g hex head self drilling screws or M6 bolts and anchors, as Hobson lists. The slots let you adjust the position before you tighten.
  3. Screw the threaded rod into the boss and lock it with a nut, or mount the pipe clamp on the stud.

Load ratings and design

Hobson publishes no load ratings for the beam clamps, clevis hangers or mounting plates. They are not for lifting and not for supporting people. What a services hanger may carry, the rod size, hanger spacing and the fixing into the structure all have to come from the services designer, engineer or the maker of the support system, and the fixings must suit what they go into.

Zinc plated or hot dip galvanised?

From Hobson's finish comparison and its corrosion guide for metal connectors:

  • Zinc plated (beam clamps, mounting plates, light duty clevis hanger): a 5 micron zinc coating, which Hobson recommends for indoor and non-corrosive conditions. Its corrosion guide allows zinc plating only for parts enclosed inside a building in very low and low corrosion zones.
  • Hot dip galvanised (clevis hangers): a 50 micron coating with high corrosion resistance, recommended for long term outdoor use. For parts exposed to the weather, the guide calls for hot dip galvanising or stainless; in the sea spray zone, stainless; within 2m of a pool, 316 stainless. We do not carry these hangers in stainless.
  • Match the rod and nuts to the hanger: hot dip galvanised threaded rod with galvanised hangers outside, so one part does not rust before the rest.

Questions

What is a beam clamp used for?

Hanging threaded rod from a steel I-beam. The clamp grips the flange and the rod hangs from it to carry pipes, ducts, cable tray or other services. Hobson publishes no load rating; loads and spacing come from the services designer.

What size rod fits your beam clamps?

M10 or M12: there is a beam clamp for each. Both clamp onto the flange with an M10 bolt and lock nut (17mm hex).

Will the beam clamp fit my beam?

Hobson lists it for straight and tapered I-beam flanges and multiple flange thicknesses. The jaw opening is 20mm on the M10 clamp and 26mm on the M12, but the clamping bolt reaches into the jaw and Hobson publishes no maximum flange thickness, so try the clamp on the flange or send us the flange size.

How much weight can a beam clamp hold?

Hobson publishes no load rating for these beam clamps, hangers or mounting plates. Get the load, rod size and spacing for a services hanger from the services designer, engineer or support system maker.

Which mounting plate do I need?

Centre nut for threaded rod at right angles to a wall or ceiling, horizontal nut for rod parallel to the surface, vertical nut for rod running down a wall, and centre bolt for an M10 stud to mount a pipe clamp on.

What screws do I use to fix a mounting plate?

Hobson lists 14g hex head self drilling screws or M6 bolts and anchors through the two slotted holes, which let you adjust the position.

Can I use these outside?

Use the hot dip galvanised clevis hangers outside, with galvanised rod and nuts, but not in the sea spray zone, where Hobson's corrosion guide calls for stainless, or within 2m of a pool, where it calls for 316 stainless. We do not carry these hangers in stainless. The zinc plated beam clamps and mounting plates are for indoor, non-corrosive conditions.
