What a countersink drill bit does
A countersink drill bit drills the pilot hole for a screw and cuts the cone-shaped countersink for its head at the same time. The EZBIT (Power-TX EZ drill bit kit) gives a chip-free countersunk pilot hole and helps stop the timber splitting, which is why it is used for decking and general timber work. Hobson lists it for both softwood and hardwood.
A free-spinning plastic collar rides against the timber face, so every hole stops at the same depth, and the collar height adjusts for different hole and countersink depths. The tool has a 1/4 inch drive and drills to a maximum depth of 45mm.
Choosing the right countersink bit size
Match the kit to the gauge of the screw you are driving: a #10 kit for 10 gauge screws, a #12 kit for 12 gauge, and so on. The gauge sets the pilot drill diameter, from 3.2mm for #8 to 4.0mm for #12.
Buy a kit to start. When the drill bit wears or breaks, a replacement pack of the same gauge holds 5 drill bits and a hex key, so you keep the rest of the kit.

How to use a countersink drill bit
Hobson does not recommend using an impact driver with this kit.
- Adjust the plastic collar for the countersink depth you want, and test it on a scrap of the same timber.
- Pre-drill into the hardwood or softwood, driving the tool until the plastic sleeve sits fully against the timber.
- Drive the screw with a cordless screwdriver set at no more than 1,500 RPM, with a drive bit to suit the screw head, keeping firm, steady pressure.
- Take care not to overtighten the screw.
Countersinking decking screws
Countersinking lets a countersunk or bugle head screw finish flush with the deck board instead of crushing or splitting the surface. Pick the kit by the gauge of your decking screw and set the collar on an offcut of the same boards before you start the deck.
Choose the screw finish for where the deck is.
