Appearance

Merbau heartwood is yellow-brown to orange-brown when freshly cut, darkening to a rich reddish-brown with age. The grain is typically interlocked or wavy, producing a ribbon figure on radial surfaces. The texture is coarse but even, and freshly cut timber has a characteristic oily scent.

Workability

Merbau dries well with minimal shrinkage. It finishes effectively with paint, stain, and polish, and responds well to hand and machine tools. Be aware of potential gum bleed which can stain surrounding surfaces, particularly on new decking installations during the first few months.

Availability

Nearly all Merbau sold in Australia is imported, mostly through Indonesia and also from Malaysia. It does grow in far North Queensland, but only in small numbers, so local supply is minor.
