About the Disc Spring (Belleville) Washer

Disc springs, or Belleville washers, are cone shaped spring washers that push back hard over a short travel, used to keep bolts tight through vibration, heat movement and relaxation, to preload bearings, and in stacks for heavy spring loads. Schnorr disc springs (DIN EN 16983) run from 6 to 318mm outside diameter in plain hardened steel and 6 to 63mm in stainless, with some zinc flake and mechanically galvanised sizes; Schnorr type K bearing preload springs run from 9.8 to 248mm; and 304 stainless Belleville washers are sized by bolt from M4 to M36. Choose the type and size above; the guide below covers stacking and spring forces.

Also called Belleville washers, conical disc washers or cone washers.

What disc springs and Belleville washers do

A disc spring, or Belleville washer, is a washer pressed into a shallow cone. Under load the cone flattens, and it pushes back with a high force over a very short travel, so a lot of spring force fits in a small space. Schnorr lists their strengths as high spring force for the space, no setting or fatigue under normal loads, and a long service life.

Hobson describes its Belleville washers as used to solve vibration, thermal expansion and relaxation by keeping tension in a connection; it publishes no load rating for them. Listed uses include pipe flanges, small machine tools, recoil mechanisms and joints where different rates of expansion could let a bolt relax. Schnorr's reference list adds percussion drills, overload limiters, machine tool spindles, actuators, control valves, pressure-relief valves and pipelines under pressure.

Disc springs, bearing preload springs or Belleville washers?

  • Schnorr disc springs (DIN EN 16983, which replaced DIN 2093 on 1 February 2017): the full range, sized by outside diameter x inside diameter x thickness, in plain hardened steel from 6 to 318mm outside diameter and stainless from 6 to 63mm, plus a zinc flake 34 x 12.3 x 1.25 and 50 x 18.4 x 2.5 and a mechanically galvanised 40 x 20.4 x 2.25.
  • Schnorr type K bearing preload springs (non-slotted): thin springs made to preload the outer ring of a ball bearing, in sizes to suit ball bearing series EL, R, 62 and 63. Order them by the bearing they go with.
  • Belleville washers (HEC 2093A, 304 stainless): sized by the bolt they fit, M4 to M36, for keeping tension in a bolted joint.
  • Looking for washers that lock a nut against vibration? Schnorr serrated safety washers and Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers are on our safety washer page.

How disc springs are sized

A disc spring is named by outside diameter x inside diameter x thickness in millimetres (De x Di x t): a 40 x 20.4 x 1.5 spring is 40mm across, has a 20.4mm hole and is 1.5mm thick. Two more figures describe it: the free height lo (overall height of the unloaded spring) and the cone height ho (how far it can flatten, lo minus t).

In the selector, Size is the outside diameter and the second box gives the inside diameter x thickness. Pick the inside diameter for the bolt or rod the spring sits on; Hobson's Belleville sheet pairs a 10.2mm hole with M10, 12.3mm with M12 and 16.3mm with M16. The disc spring range uses the same holes, except that the 23 to 31.5mm outside diameter springs have a 12.2mm hole rather than 12.3mm.

Stacking disc springs in series and parallel

From Schnorr's selection sheet, the cone shape lets single springs be combined to change the force and travel:

  • In series (alternate springs facing opposite ways): the travel adds up at the same force. Three springs in series give three times the travel of one.
  • In parallel (springs nested the same way): the force adds up at the same travel. Two springs in parallel give twice the force of one.
  • Combined: parallel pairs stacked in series give, for example, double the force and triple the travel with 3 pairs.
  • Adding or taking out springs changes the stack length and its force curve. Stacks are largely self-damping, particularly with parallel stacking, and stacking springs of different thickness can give a progressive curve.
  • For sinusoidal (smoothly cycling) loads, Schnorr says the arrangement should achieve a fatigue life over 2 million cycles wherever possible, with the minimum preload kept and the springs correctly guided (on a bolt, rod or in a bore). Schnorr's fatigue life estimates are based on a sinusoidal load; where the load is a step input such as impact, Schnorr advises on fatigue life for the application. For a stack under cycling, impact or safety critical loads, talk to us before you order.

Disc spring force: examples for common bolt sizes

Schnorr publishes the force each standard steel disc spring gives at 25%, 50% and about 75% of its cone height. These are some of the plain steel sizes we carry with inside diameters that suit common bolts. Select a row to open that spring.

Spring force F in newtons (N) for one plain steel disc spring at a travel s of 25%, 50% and about 75% of the cone height ho, from Schnorr's standard material disc spring table. Sizes are De x Di x t in mm; lo is the free height and ho the cone height, in mm. The forces are nominal values for one spring. Schnorr's tolerance sheet gives the DIN 2093 load tolerance only at the test length lo minus 0.75 ho (the 75% column), measured between lubricated, hardened, ground plates: +25%/-7.5% for t under 1.25mm, +15%/-7.5% for 1.25 to 3mm, +10%/-5% for over 3 to 6mm. It gives no tolerance for the 25% and 50% figures. Bolt size is the bolt Hobson's Belleville sheet pairs with that hole. Not for the stainless springs, which Schnorr tabulates separately. Plain steel, stainless or coated disc springs?

From Hobson's finish comparison and Schnorr's materials sheet:

  • Plain (standard) springs: Schnorr's materials sheet says its standard process for low alloy steel springs is zinc phosphating, then impregnating with corrosion protection oil. Schnorr says that is enough in the vast majority of cases, mainly inside, and outdoors where the springs are installed with weather protection.
  • Zinc flake silver: Schnorr's sheet describes Dacromet, an inorganic silver-grey coating of zinc and aluminium flakes, baked on at over 280 degrees C. Hobson lists our zinc flake springs as over 1,000 hours.
  • Mechanically galvanised: Schnorr's sheet describes mechanical (peen) plating with zinc, usually 8 micron thick and up to 40 micron, with no hydrogen embrittlement when the process is carried out properly. Hobson's general finish guide gives its mechanically galvanised products a 50 micron coating; Schnorr's sheet does not give the thickness of these springs.
  • Stainless: for wet and outdoor work. No stainless is made to sit in seawater, and even stainless can visibly corrode where salt is left to build up.
  • Schnorr notes that for high temperatures or hostile environments, special spring materials need to be specified. Talk to us before using disc springs hot or in chemicals.

Questions

Is a Belleville washer the same as a disc spring?

Yes, it is the same conical spring. Disc spring is the engineering name (DIN EN 16983, formerly DIN 2093); Belleville washer is the common name. On this page the Belleville washers are 304 stainless and sized by bolt, and the Schnorr disc springs are sized by outside diameter x inside diameter x thickness.

Can disc springs be stacked?

Yes. Facing alternate ways (in series) the travel adds up at the same force; nested the same way (in parallel) the force adds up at the same travel. Schnorr's example: three springs in series give triple the travel, two in parallel give double the force.

What size disc spring do I need for an M10 bolt?

One with a 10.2mm inside diameter, the hole Hobson's Belleville sheet pairs with M10. The M10 Belleville washer is 20 x 10.2 x 1.1mm, and Schnorr disc springs with a 10.2mm hole run from 20 to 28mm outside diameter in several thicknesses.

How much force does a disc spring give?

It depends on the size and how far it is compressed. For example, Schnorr gives a plain steel 20 x 10.2 x 1.1mm spring 548N at 25%, 1,050N at 50% and 1,521N at about 75% of its 0.45mm cone height. These are nominal figures for one spring; see the tolerance note under the force table, which lists more sizes.

How do I choose a bearing preload spring?

By the bearing. Find the bearing number in the type K table: a 6204 bearing, for example, takes the 46.5 x 30.5 x 0.6mm spring, which Schnorr rates at 153N preload at 75% of its cone height.

Are your disc springs stainless?

Some are. The Belleville washers are 304 stainless, and Schnorr disc springs come in stainless from 6 to 63mm outside diameter. The rest of the range is plain hardened steel, with a few zinc flake and mechanically galvanised sizes.

How are disc springs sold?

Packs vary by size: mostly 100 for small springs, then 50, 20, 10 or 5 as they get bigger, and single plain steel disc springs from 150mm outside diameter up. Some sizes differ, so the tables list the pack for each.
