Key things to remember
The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.
- Timber to metal fixing: fences, chipboard, composite panels and timber floors. Suits corrosive conditions.
- Extended 20mm drill point for thicker steel. Tested drilling 8mm hot rolled steel in 10 seconds maximum (7 average) at 2,200 RPM with a 27kg load.
- The wings ream a clearance hole in the timber and break off once the screw starts drilling the metal. Six ribs under the head let it sink into the timber.
- Bi-metal 304 stainless with R1000 hours protective coating. 12 gauge x 24 TPI x 60mm, square #3 drive, packs of 500 (QFind QB16).
- Working pull-out load: 1,700N in 3.0mm G2 purlin, 4,000N in 5mm and 4,600N in 8mm hot rolled steel. Figures are from laboratory tests on Hobson's DRiLLX screws, factor of safety 2.5 for steel included.
- Wing screws are not recommended for fixing long lengths of timber directly to steel: the screw may break from movement between metal and timber caused by thermal expansion, humidity, building movement or overdriving.
- Install with a cordless screwdriver at 2,200 to 3,000 RPM, keep firm, steady pressure while it drills, and do not overtighten. Impact drivers are not recommended.
Who it helps: Builders fixing timber to heavier steel sections up to 8mm.
