Key things to remember
The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.
- 10 gauge, 16 TPI, 16 and 25mm long, flanged hex head 11mm across with a 5/16 inch drive.
- C1022 hardened steel with the X9 ProteXion coating, which the sheet rates as suitable for ISO 9223 category 4 environments.
- Uses: wall cladding, sheds, fencing and gates, metal to metal fixing, and hinges to metal posts, gates and doors.
- Working pullout load: 400N in G2 steel 0.8mm, 2,400N in G450 2.0mm and 3,000N in G2 3.0mm. The sheet also lists mean and characteristic test loads, but does not say how the working loads were derived, so treat them as a guide only.
- Drill point test: under a 24kg load at 2,200 RPM it drills 2.5mm G450 plate in no more than 2.5 seconds on average (3 seconds at most for any one screw).
- Drive with a cordless screw gun at 2,200 to 3,000 RPM using a hex drive bit, with firm, steady pressure, and do not over-tighten. Impact drivers are not recommended.
Who it helps: Builders, fabricators and roofers choosing a self-drilling screw for steel, and staff checking sizes or pullout figures.
