Blind Rivet Strength Chart: Tensile and Shear Loads by Material and Size

Hobson's one-page table of mechanical properties for break mandrel blind rivets (pop rivets). It gives the tensile and shear load for each rivet size and material, in lbf, kgf and newtons, with IFI 114 as the source.

What this covers

  • Rivet sizes
  • Tensile load
  • Shear load
  • Materials and IFI 114 grades

For Pop Rivets (Blind Rivets).

Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • Covers rivet series 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8, which are 2.4mm, 3.2mm, 4.0mm, 4.8mm and 6.3mm diameter.
  • Materials listed: aluminium shell rivets (IFI 114 grades 11 and 19), steel shell with steel mandrel (grade 30), 304/316 stainless shell (grades 50 and 51), and Monel (Ni/Cu) shell with steel mandrel (grade 40).
  • 4.8mm rivets: aluminium shell 1,423N tensile and 1,157N shear (grade 11) or 2,224N and 1,690N (grade 19); steel 3,025N and 2,402N; stainless 5,338N and 4,226N; Monel 4,448N and 3,559N.
  • 3.2mm rivets: aluminium 667N or 979N tensile; steel 1,379N tensile and 1,157N shear; stainless 2,358N and 1,868N.
  • Copper rivets are not shear or tensile tested, so none are listed.

Who it helps: Fabricators and staff comparing rivet materials for strength.
