Hitch Pins, R Pins & Hair Pin Clips
Hitch pins with linch pins, double coil R clips and hair pin retainer clips in zinc plated steel. Hobson publishes no rating for them: not for tow hitches, drawbars or trailer couplings.
About the Hitch Pins, R Pins & Hair Pin Clips
Hitch pins, R pins and hair pin clips hold a pin, bolt or axle in place and come out by hand, for retaining clevis pins, shafts and grooved pins on equipment. Hitch pins with a linch pin come in zinc yellow mild steel from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inch diameter and 4-1/4 to 8-1/4 inches long (minimum order 2), and double coil R pins (2 to 8mm) and hair pin clips (#3 to #11) are zinc plated, in packs of 25 to 200. Hobson publishes no load rating, so they are not for tow hitches, drawbars or trailer couplings. Choose the type and size above; the guide below covers fitting.
Also called R pins, hair pin clips or retainer clips.

Hitch pins, R pins and hair pin clips
Hobson publishes no load rating, working load or capacity for any pin or clip on this page. That is why we do not offer them for tow hitches, towbar receivers, trailer couplings or anything holding a load over people: those need a pin rated for the job by the vehicle, trailer or equipment maker, or an engineer's specification.
- Hitch pin with linch pin: a pin with a handle and collar at one end and a cross hole at the other. The linch pin goes through the cross hole and, per Hobson, stops the hitch pin accidentally sliding out. Hobson's drawing shows the linch pin tethered to the handle by a chain. Hobson publishes no rating for them, so they are not for tow hitches, drawbars, trailer or implement couplings, three-point linkages or any pin that joins a towed or towing machine; use the pin the machine or trailer maker specifies.
- Double coil R pin (R clip): a spring wire clip. Its straight leg goes through a cross hole in a clevis pin, bolt or axle and its curved leg clips over the shaft. Hobson lists them for securing clevis pins, bolts and axles; the double coil lets you attach a tether cable so the clip is not lost, and it can be reused.
- Hair pin retainer clip: a spring clip that retains grooved pins. Hobson lists it as reusable and easy to fit, with each size suiting a range of pin diameters.
Hitch pin sizes
Hitch pins are sold in inches as pin diameter x length. The pin has to slide through the holes it joins, and its length (C on Hobson's drawing, from under the collar to the linch pin hole) has to clear everything it passes through. Select a row to open that pin in the selector.
Every hitch pin we carry, smallest first, from Hobson's hitch pin with linch pin sheet (260513DYK), in inches as Hobson lists them. Letters match Hobson's drawing: A pin diameter, C length from under the collar to the linch pin hole, B overall length, D collar diameter, G linch pin diameter. A blank cell means no figure we can confirm. Minimum order 2. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

R pin sizes: hole and shaft
Pick an R pin by two numbers: the cross hole it goes through (its size, 2 to 8mm) and the diameter of the shaft it clips over. A 4mm R pin suits a 4mm hole in a shaft of 16 to 25mm. Single coil R clips (humpback pins) from 1.2 to 7.9mm are on the split pin page.
Double coil R pins, from Hobson's double coil R clip sheet (240129DYK), dimensions in mm. Letters match Hobson's drawing: D1 the cross hole the clip passes through, D2 the shaft diameter range it clips over, E the eye, L1 and L2 the lengths as drawn. Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
Hair pin clip sizes
Hobson lists the hair pin clip sizes as 3, 5, 8 and 11 and gives the clip dimensions below, but no pin diameter range for each size. Check the clip against the pin and its groove, or ask us.
Hair pin retainer clips, from Hobson's hair pin retainer clip sheet (240123DYK), dimensions in mm. Letters match Hobson's drawing: F the wire, A overall length, B the widest part of the body, C the inside of the loop. Pack of 200. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
Zinc yellow and zinc plated: where they last
Hobson's coatings chart puts both at about 5μm of zinc. Zinc plated (the R pins and hair pin clips) is for indoor and non-corrosive environments. Zinc yellow passivate (the hitch pins) has more corrosion resistance than plain zinc but is still recommended for low-corrosion environments or temporary fixing.
Hobson's corrosion guide for metal connectors calls for stainless steel or hot dip galvanising for anything exposed to weather and rain. On gear that lives outside, check pins and clips for rust and replace them; for stainless, see the 316 stainless linch pins and 304 stainless locking pins on the locking pin page.
Fitting hitch pins and R pins
- Line up the holes and push the hitch pin through until the collar sits against the part.
- Fit the linch pin through the cross hole in the end of the hitch pin.
- For an R pin, push the straight leg through the cross hole in the clevis pin or shaft until the curved leg clips over the shaft.
- Tether the R pin through its double coil where losing it would let a pin fall out.
- Check pins and clips before use and replace any that are bent, cracked, rusted or no longer spring tight.

Questions
What is an R pin?
A spring wire clip shaped like an R. The straight leg goes through a cross hole in a clevis pin, bolt or axle and the curved leg clips over the shaft, so it can be fitted and removed by hand. Our double coil R pins come in 2 to 8mm for shafts of 9 to 45mm.
What size R pin do I need?
Match the R pin to the cross hole and check the shaft fits its range: 2mm for 9 to 14mm shafts, 3mm for 10 to 20mm, 4mm for 16 to 25mm, 5mm for 20 to 35mm, 6mm for 28 to 40mm and 8mm for 30 to 45mm.
What are hair pin clips used for?
Hobson lists its hair pin retainer clips for retaining grooved pins. They are reusable and come in sizes #3, #5, #8 and #11, zinc plated, in packs of 200.
Can I use these hitch pins on a trailer, drawbar or tow hitch?
No. Hobson publishes no load rating or capacity for these hitch pins, so they are not for tow hitches, towbar receivers, drawbars, trailer or implement couplings, three-point linkages or any pin that joins a towed or towing machine. Use the pin the towbar, trailer, vehicle or machine maker specifies.
What is the linch pin for?
It goes through the cross hole in the end of the hitch pin and stops the hitch pin from sliding out. Each hitch pin comes with its linch pin; spare linch pins are on the locking pin page.
Are R pins and hair pin clips reusable?
Yes. Hobson lists both the double coil R pins and the hair pin clips as reusable. Replace any clip that is bent or has lost its spring.
