About the Track Nut
Track nuts take the track bolts that hold the track shoes to the chain on excavators, dozers and other crawler machines. They are grade 8, supplied plain: square track nuts in UNF from 1/2 to 1 inch and metric fine from M14 to M22, plus square round face, square stepped, square collar, hex and hex round face styles up to 1-3/8 inch and M27. What a track nut does
A track nut sits in the link of a crawler machine's track chain and takes the track bolt that comes through the track shoe (grouser plate). Hobson lists its grade 8 track nuts with its grade 9 track bolts in the earthmoving range, supplied plain.
These are earthmoving track nuts. They are not the T-slot nuts used in workbench and cargo tracks, and not railway track fastenings (rail joints use fishbolts).
Square, round face, stepped, collar or hex?
The nut style has to suit the pocket in the track link, so match the nut you take off or the machine's parts book. Hobson makes six styles:
- Square: the plain square track nut, in UNF from 1/2 to 1 inch and metric fine from M14 to M22.
- Square round face: a square nut with a rounded face, in 7/8, 1 and 1-1/8 inch UNF and M27 x 2.0.
- Square stepped: a square nut with a step, in 7/8 inch UNF.
- Square collar: a square nut with a collar, in M20 x 1.5.
- Hex: a hex track nut in 1/2 inch.
- Hex round face: a hex nut with a rounded face, in 1-3/8 inch UNF.

Diameter in inches (UNF) or metric (fine thread). TPI = threads per inch. Track bolts in that size: the grade 9 track bolts we carry in the same diameter, with their length in mm. The 1/2 inch nuts also carry a 14.2mm (hex) or 15.0mm (square) figure in Hobson's listing, shown as the length option in the selector. Pack is the minimum order. UNF, the 1 inch special pitch and metric fine
All our track nuts have fine threads. The imperial nuts are UNF: 20 TPI on 1/2 inch, 18 on 5/8, 16 on 3/4, 14 on 7/8, and 12 on 1-1/8 and 1-3/8 inch. The 1 inch nuts are 1-14 (14 TPI) to match the 1 inch track bolts. Hobson's bolt chart gives 1 inch UNF as 12 TPI, with 14 TPI in brackets; these track nuts and bolts are the 14 TPI (1-14) version, so a common 12 TPI 1 inch UNF nut or bolt will not mate. The metric nuts are metric fine, 1.5mm pitch from M14 to M22 and 2.0mm on M27.
An imperial nut will not take a metric bolt, so measure the old bolt or check the parts book first.
Grade 8 track nuts and tightening
Every track nut on this page is grade 8 to Hobson's HEC specification, and Hobson pairs them with its grade 9 track bolts. Hobson publishes no proof load, strength or tightening torque figures for track nuts or track bolts, and its grade 9 torque table is for plow bolts only. Tighten track hardware to the torque and procedure in the machine maker's service manual, and replace like with like: same grade, thread, style and size.
Fitting track nuts
- Identify the nut: style, diameter and thread (UNF, 1-14 or metric fine), from the nut you take off or the machine's parts book.
- Clean the threads and the nut seats in the link.
- Fit the track bolt through the shoe and run the track nut on by hand to check the thread matches.
- Tighten in the order and to the torque the machine maker gives.
Plain finish
Hobson supplies its track nuts plain: no coating, lightly oiled to inhibit rust in the packaging and assist installation, the same as its track bolts. There is no galvanised or zinc plated track nut in the range.

What is a track nut?
The nut that sits in the track chain link of a crawler machine and holds the track bolt that fixes the track shoe. Ours are grade 8, fine thread and supplied plain, in square, square round face, square stepped, square collar, hex and hex round face styles.
What thread do track nuts have?
A fine thread. Our imperial track nuts are UNF, from 20 TPI on 1/2 inch to 12 TPI on 1-1/8 and 1-3/8 inch, except the 1 inch nuts, which are 1-14 (14 TPI) to suit the 1 inch track bolts. Our metric track nuts are 1.5mm pitch from M14 to M22 and 2.0mm on M27.
Will a standard 1 inch UNF nut fit a 1 inch track bolt?
No. The 1 inch track bolts and nuts are the 14 TPI (1-14) version. Hobson's bolt chart gives 1 inch UNF as 12 TPI, with 14 TPI in brackets, and the common 12 TPI nut will not mate. Use the 1 inch track nut, square or square round face.
What torque for track nuts?
Use the torque and procedure in the machine maker's service manual. Hobson publishes no torque figures for track nuts or track bolts.
