Black pallet wrap: what this roll is
This is a black plastic film 25 micron (0.025mm) thick, wound 400m long on a 500mm wide roll with a cardboard core. Hobson lists it as shrink wrap and does not describe it as stretch film. It comes as a hand roll, the format people look for when they search pallet wrap or black pallet wrap, and the steps below are for wrapping by hand.
Wrapping holds the items on a pallet together as one unit. Black film means what is on the pallet is not on show.

Pallet wrap roll size and how far a roll goes

- Worked example: a pallet 1.2m by 1.2m is 4.8m around, so a 400m roll gives about 83 laps of the pallet (400 divided by 4.8).
- If each lap overlaps the one below by half the 500mm width, every lap adds 250mm of height. A load 1.2m high then takes about 5 laps up, plus the laps you add at the base and the top.
- With 3 laps at the base and 3 at the top, that is about 11 laps, or about 53m of film (11 x 4.8m), so a 400m roll does about 7 such pallets.
- The box is the minimum order: wrap is sold in boxes of 4 rolls.

How to hand wrap a pallet
- Stack the load square on the pallet, heavy items at the bottom, with nothing hanging over the edge.
- Tuck the end of the film between two items or under a top layer, or tie it around a corner of the pallet.
- Start at the base: wrap two or three laps around the pallet itself and the bottom layer, so the load is tied to the pallet, not only to itself.
- Walk around the pallet holding the roll upright, keeping the film snug against the load without tearing it, and work up the stack, overlapping each lap on the one below.
- Add two or three laps at the top. Fold the film over the top corners if you need to hold a loose top layer.
- Cut or tear the film and press the tail flat onto the wrap so it holds.
Pallet wrap is not load restraint
Wrap keeps a load together as one unit; it does not hold that unit on a truck, ute or trailer. Hobson publishes no strength rating for this film, so never count it as part of the restraint on a vehicle.
