SS316 HBS Bolts for Blind and Hollow Steel Connections: Data Sheet

Hobson's five-page data sheet for SS316 HBS bolts, part KBB16PHM: a bolt you install from one side to fix steel to square, rectangular or circular hollow sections, or wherever the back of the joint cannot be reached. It covers the 3-part and 5-part assemblies, dimensions, loads, hole sizes and installation.

What this covers

  • Applications
  • 3-part and 5-part assemblies
  • Dimensions and grip range
  • Mechanical properties
  • Hole size and spacing
  • Installation
  • Test certificates

For HBS Blind Bolt.

Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • Sizes M10 and M12 (3-part assembly) and M16 and M20 (5-part assembly with a rubber washer). Grip ranges: M10 x 55 3mm to 22mm, M12 x 60 3mm to 25mm, M16 x 80 12mm to 29mm, M16 x 100 29mm to 50mm, M20 x 90 12mm to 34mm.
  • All 316 stainless: A4-70 bolt with a 316 stainless sleeve that expands as you tighten and a cone with interlocking grooves to stop loosening.
  • Working loads for the bolt assembly (tensile / shear): M10 10kN / 12kN, M12 13kN / 15kN, M16 23kN / 28kN, M20 34kN / 43kN. The sheet notes the connection as a whole may be weaker because of the other parts in it.
  • The characteristic loads in the same table are for engineers working out design resistance, not working loads.
  • Hole in the steelwork and tightening torque: M10 18mm to 19mm, 45Nm; M12 20mm to 21mm, 80Nm; M16 26mm to 28mm, 190Nm; M20 33mm to 35mm, 300Nm. Minimum fixture thickness is 1mm for M10 and M12, 8mm for M16 and M20.
  • To install, hold the hex collar with a spanner and tighten the bolt head with a torque wrench to the specified torque.
