HBS Blind Bolt with Hex Head: Data Sheet for Hollow Steel Connections
Hobson's four-page product data sheet for the HBS Bolt (part prefix KBB88GHM), a hex head blind bolt that is fitted from one side to fix steel to hollow steel sections. It gives the loads, hole sizes and torque, the installation steps, and the length and grip range of every size from M8 to M20.
What this covers
- Applications
- Characteristic and working loads
- Hole size and spacing
- Installation
- Dimensions and grip range

Key things to remember
The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.
- Class 8.8, hot dipped galvanised. Fitted from one side, for fixing steel to square, rectangular and circular hollow sections, or wherever access is limited.
- M8, M10 and M12 are a 3-part assembly (bolt, cone, sleeve with built-in collar). M16 and M20 are a 5-part assembly that adds a separate collar and a rubber washer.
- Working loads, tension and shear: M8 6kN and 7kN, M12 13kN and 15kN, M20 34kN and 43kN.
- The characteristic loads (M12: 51.6kN tension, 58.3kN shear) are for engineers calculating design resistance and are not working loads. They apply to the HBS assembly only; the connection may be weaker because of the other parts in it.
- Hole in the steel: M8 14.00 to 15.00mm, M12 20.00 to 21.00mm, M20 33.00 to 35.00mm. Minimum fixture thickness 1mm for M8 to M12, 8mm for M16 and M20.
- Tightening torque: M8 25Nm, M10 45Nm, M12 80Nm, M16 190Nm, M20 300Nm. Hold the hex collar with a spanner and tighten the bolt head with a torque wrench.
- Three lengths per size, each with its own grip range: for example M12 x 60 grips 3 to 25mm and M12 x 110 grips 47 to 69mm. Part numbers run KBB88GHM080050 to KBB88GHM200140.
