About the Fishbolt
Fishbolts clamp the fishplates that join two lengths of railway track. Ours are plain class 8.8 to AS 1085.4, M24 x 140mm with a 50mm M24 x 3.0 thread, in packs of 10, as a fishbolt and nut, or as a fishbolt, nut and spring washer (AS 1085.4/7). What fishbolts do
A fishbolt clamps the fishplates (joint bars) either side of the rail web at a bolted rail joint, holding the two rail ends in line. Hobson lists its fishbolts in its high-tensile range, made to AS 1085.4, property class 8.8, supplied plain, with the nut or with the nut and a spring washer.
These are railway fishbolts. They are not the earthmoving track bolts that hold track shoes to the chain on excavators and dozers, which have their own page.
Which assembly to order
- Fishbolt and nut: M24 x 140mm fishbolt with its nut, to AS 1085.4, class 8.8.
- Fishbolt, nut and spring washer: the same bolt and nut with a spring washer, listed to AS 1085.4/7 (AS 1085.7 covers the washer).
- The M24 AS 1085.7 washer is also available on its own in packs of 100: Hobson lists it as a spring washer (described as a hard washer), plain.
- Use the assembly your track owner or rail network specifies, and replace like with like: same standard, size, class and washer arrangement.

Tightening and track work
Hobson publishes no tightening torque or bolt tension for its fishbolts. Tighten fishbolts to the torque and procedure in the track owner's or rail network's standards, and do track work under that network's safeworking rules. Check bolted joints on the schedule the track owner sets.
Plain finish
Both assemblies are supplied plain. Hobson's finish comparison describes plain as no added coating, supplied lightly oiled to inhibit rust in the packaging and to help installation. Hobson lists no galvanised or zinc plated fishbolts, so if your specification calls for a coating, ask us before you order.

What is a fishbolt?
A bolt that clamps the fishplates (joint bars) to the rails at a bolted rail joint. Ours are M24 x 140mm, class 8.8, made to AS 1085.4 and supplied plain, with a nut or with a nut and spring washer.
Is a fishbolt the same as a track bolt?
No. Fishbolts join rails at a fishplate joint. Track bolts hold track shoes to the chain on crawler machines such as excavators and dozers; they are on their own page.
