Shear Connector Stud
Weld-through shear connector studs and reduced base arc studs with matching ceramic ferrules for composite steel deck and beam construction.
About the Shear Connector Stud
Shear studs are welded onto steel beams, often through the steel decking, so the concrete slab poured on top works together with the beam in composite floors. They come in 16, 19 and 22mm diameter from 75 to 250mm long, with DF thru-deck, UF clean beam and RF ceramic ferrules to match, plus class 4.8 reduced base arc studs in M16 and M20, all listed by Hobson against AS 1554.2. Choose the type and size above; the guide below covers sizes, head dimensions and which ferrule to use.
Also called shear studs, shear connectors or weld studs.

What shear studs do
A shear connector stud is a plain steel stud with a round head that is stud welded to a steel beam, then cast into the concrete slab poured over it. Hobson describes it as a structural connection between the steel structure and the concrete: the shear studs make the steel and concrete act together (composite action), which makes the structure more efficient. Hobson lists bridges, industrial structures and high-rise buildings, and the usual places are composite steel deck slabs and composite steel and concrete beams.
Hobson publishes no shear capacities for these studs. The stud diameter, length, number, spacing and the welding are set by the structural engineer's design and the project's welding specification. Hobson lists the studs and ferrules against AS 1554.2, and its test certificates for the shear studs (ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation after fracture) can be downloaded from hobson.com.au.

Which ceramic ferrule?
Shear studs are sold without ferrules: order the ceramic ferrule that matches the stud diameter and the job. Hobson's types are DF thru-deck ferrules, for welding studs through steel decking, and UF clean beam ferrules, for welding straight onto the beam. RF ferrules suit the reduced base arc studs.

Reduced base arc studs
A reduced base arc stud is a threaded weld stud (class 4.8, plain) whose shank diameter at the base is less than the thread's major diameter. Hobson says this is designed for the thread diameter of the stud to exceed the weld fillet, and it is used to decrease the clearance hole size. Each stud has a flux ball at the end to stabilise the arc, for a stronger and cleaner weld, and is about 3 to 4mm longer before welding than after. Hobson lists wear plates, applications needing limited space around the stud, electronic and automotive assemblies, and construction.
Reduced base arc studs we carry, by thread x length after welding. Dimensions in mm from Hobson's reduced base arc stud sheet (2026). Hobson's dimension data gives slightly different figures for the M16 x 40 (thread 32.5, length before weld 43.6). Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
Finish
All the studs on this page are plain steel with no added coating (listed by Hobson as plain). Any corrosion protection needed is set by the project specification.

Questions
What are shear studs used for?
They are welded to steel beams and cast into the concrete slab to connect the two, so the steel and concrete act together as a composite structure. Hobson lists bridges, industrial structures and high-rise buildings.
What sizes of shear studs do you have?
16mm diameter from 75 to 150mm long, 19mm from 75 to 250mm, and 22mm from 100 to 250mm. The 16 and 19mm studs have a 32mm head, the 22mm studs a 35mm head.
Do shear studs come with ferrules?
No, ceramic ferrules are sold separately in packs of 100. Use the DF thru-deck ferrule when welding through steel decking and the UF clean beam ferrule when welding straight onto the beam, in the same diameter as the stud.
What load can a shear stud take?
Hobson publishes no shear capacities for these studs. The size, number and spacing of studs, and the welding, come from the structural engineer's design and the welding specification.
What standard are the shear studs made to?
Hobson lists the shear connector studs, reduced base arc studs and ceramic ferrules against AS 1554.2. Test certificates for the shear studs can be downloaded from Hobson's website.
What is a reduced base arc stud?
A threaded class 4.8 weld stud with a base narrower than the thread, so the thread diameter exceeds the weld fillet. It has a flux ball to stabilise the arc and is about 3 to 4mm longer before welding. Use the RF ceramic ferrule.
