XCHEM PRO V401 Vinylester Post-Installed Rebar Connections and Fire: European Technical Assessment ETA 24/0506

Hobson's cover and the European Technical Assessment ETA 24/0506 (7 June 2024) for XCHEM PRO V401 vinylester injection mortar used for post-installed rebar connections. It covers anchoring and lapping 8mm, 10mm and 12mm reinforcing bars into existing concrete, with design bond values and design under fire exposure.

What this covers

  • Examples of use
  • Cartridges and rebar
  • Intended use
  • Construction rules and concrete cover
  • Curing times
  • Installation instructions
  • Bond strength and fire design

For Chemical Anchors (Chemset-Style).

Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • For new reinforcing bars bonded into existing normal weight concrete, strength classes C12/15 to C50/60, under static or quasi-static loads and fire exposure. Design to EN 1992-1-1, and EN 1992-1-2 for fire, by an engineer.
  • Rebar 8mm, 10mm and 12mm, class B or C. Drill bit 12 or 14mm for 8mm and 10mm bars, 14 or 16mm for 12mm bars. Maximum embedment depth 750mm for all three.
  • Only tension forces along the bar can be carried. Joints must be roughened so aggregate protrudes, and carbonated concrete must be removed around the bar before installing (not needed for new, dry, uncarbonated members).
  • Install in dry or wet concrete, never in flooded holes, with a hammer drill or compressed air drill. Locate existing bars first, using a rebar detector if their position is unknown.
  • Minimum concrete cover for hammer drilling: 30mm + 0.06 x embedment (30mm + 0.02 x embedment with a drilling aid), and at least twice the bar diameter.
  • Cure before loading: at 20 to 30 degrees C, 5 minutes working time, 30 minutes in dry and 4 hours in wet concrete. Do not move the bar after the gel time.
  • Reaction to fire class A1. Fire resistance is given as a bond strength reduction under fire for engineers to calculate the anchorage length; the bond values are design values, not working loads.

Who it helps: Structural engineers and builders adding starter bars or lapping new reinforcement into existing concrete.
