| 620–720mm | Robes, toilets, small rooms and tight hallways |
| 770mm | Bedrooms and living areas where 820 will not fit |
| 820mm | The Australian standard: bedrooms, living areas, most internal openings |
| 870–920mm | Entrance doors, wider internal doors, and accessible openings (920 achieves the AS 1428.1 850mm clear width) |
| 1020–1200mm | Wide entrance doors and statement front entries |
Accessible door widths: why 920mm is the compliance size
AS 1428.1 (the Australian standard for access and mobility) requires a minimum 850mm clear opening through an accessible doorway. The clear opening is measured with the door standing open, so the frame, the door stops and the door's own thickness all eat into it. In practice, a 920mm door leaf is what reliably delivers a compliant clear width, which is why it is the specified size for:
- • Accessible (disabled) toilets and bathrooms in public and commercial buildings
- • Nursing homes and aged-care facilities
- • NDIS / Specialist Disability Accommodation and accessible housing
- • Homes built to the Livable Housing Design guidelines
Most of our internal and entrance ranges come in 920mm as a standard size (see the tables below). Required clear openings vary by building class, so confirm the spec with your certifier and we will match the doors to it.

Flush door sizes
The everyday flush door comes in three cores, each with its own size envelope. The 2032 × 813mm honeycomb door is the old imperial (6'8" × 2'8") size still used when replacing doors in older Adelaide homes.

How to measure a door
1. Replacing a door?
Measure the existing door slab, not the frame: height along the hinge edge, width across the middle, thickness at the edge. Match the closest standard size; doors can be planed a few millimetres to fit.
2. New frame or opening?
Give us the frame (rebate) size or the stud opening. As a rule of thumb the door slab is sized to the frame with roughly 2–3mm clearance per side and at the head.
3. Outside the standard sizes?
Most ranges are made to order from about 1990 × 330mm up to 2400 × 920mm, and solid flush doors go far larger. Send the size with your enquiry and we will quote the made-to-order door.
Door size FAQs
What is the standard door size in Australia?+
The standard Australian internal door is 2040mm high × 820mm wide × 35mm thick. It is by far the most common size in Australian homes, and the default size for most door ranges.
What is the standard door height in Australia?+
Standard door height is 2040mm. Taller 2340mm doors are widely available for modern homes with higher ceilings, and some solid-core flush doors are made to order up to 2700mm or beyond.
What widths do doors come in?+
Standard widths run from 410mm to 920mm in steps: 410, 420, 460, 520, 620, 720, 770, 820, 870 and 920mm. 820mm is the standard for room doors; narrow widths (410–620mm) suit robes, pantries and linen cupboards; entrance doors are commonly 820–920mm, with 1020mm and 1200mm wide entrance doors available in select ranges.
How thick is a standard door?+
Internal doors are typically 35mm thick. External and entrance doors are typically 40mm. Some heavy-duty and solid-core doors come in 45mm.
Why do accessible bathrooms and aged-care doors need to be 920mm?+
AS 1428.1, the Australian access and mobility standard, requires a minimum 850mm clear opening through an accessible doorway. Once you allow for the frame, door stops and the thickness of the open door, a 920mm door leaf is what reliably achieves that clear width, which is why disabled toilets, nursing homes, and NDIS or aged-care projects specify 920mm doors. Always confirm the required clear opening with your certifier.
Can I get a door made in a custom size?+
Yes. Most Hume ranges are made to order in custom sizes, typically from about 1990mm high and 330mm wide up to 2400 × 920mm for panel doors. Solid-core flush doors go much larger, up to 4200 × 2400mm on the Solicore SCX1. Custom sizes carry a made-to-order surcharge and longer lead time.
How do I measure a door?+
Measure the door slab itself, not the frame: height down the hinge edge, width across the middle, and thickness at the edge. If you are replacing a door, match the existing slab size. For a new opening, the door needs to be trimmed or sized to suit the frame, so give us the frame or stud opening size and we will advise the right door size.
