What are LVLs and what are they used for?
LVL, or Laminated Veneer Lumber, is engineered structural timber. Thin timber veneers are bonded together with a waterproof adhesive, with the grain of every veneer running lengthways, then pressed into long, straight beams. Because the natural defects in timber are dispersed through the veneers, every length performs to the same engineered rating, made to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 4357.
That makes LVL straighter, stronger and more consistent than sawn timber, with a high strength-to-weight ratio and long lengths, so it spans further with fewer joins and fewer rejects on site. It is used for beams, lintels, bearers and rafters, for straight wall and floor framing, and for long-span floor and roof joists. We carry it across the E-Beam, SmartLVL, Smart10, Spec Frame and Spec Joist ranges, in beams, framing and joists.

H2S and H3: which treatment
H2S is for inside, above the ground, kept dry and protected. It is termite treated and rated for use south of the Tropic of Capricorn, which covers South Australia. Wesbeam brands its H2S LVL E2S, the blue one.
H3 is for outside, above the ground and exposed to the weather, such as exposed beams and pergola members. It protects against both termites and decay. For anything in the ground, talk to us about the right product.

E-Beam and SmartLVL are the two main LVL beam ranges we carry, both E13.2 structural LVL for beams, lintels and bearers. For framing there is E-Frame, Smart10 and Spec Frame 10.0 in E10 grade, and for floors and roofs there are the E-Joist, SmartJoist, Spec Joist and Swelite I-joists. They are all listed above with their sizes.
E13.2 (also seen as F17) is the stiffer structural grade used for beams, lintels and bearers that carry load. E10 is the LVL framing grade, sold as E-Frame, Smart10 and Spec Frame 10.0, a straighter and stronger engineered alternative to MGP10 sawn pine for studs, plates, joists and general framing.

LVL beams run from 90mm to 450mm deep, and up to 525mm in some ranges, in thicknesses from 35mm to 75mm, in lengths up to 12.6m. Framing LVL comes in 35mm and 45mm. The ranges we carry are listed above, and we can order in sizes we do not hold.
Yes. We carry I-joists for long-span floors and roofs, in the E-Joist, SmartJoist, Spec Joist and Swelite ranges, from around 200mm to 400mm deep. E-Joist, SmartJoist and Spec Joist have LVL flanges; Swelite uses finger-jointed pine flanges. An I-joist gives a deep, straight, lightweight joist that is easy to run services through. LVL is a structural product, but the right size depends on the load and the span. Always work to the relevant span tables or your engineer or building designer specification, and we will supply the sizes, grade and treatment your job needs.
