Key things to remember

The essentials from this guide, at a glance.

  • Decks must have a fall of at least 1 in 100 to avoid ponding, with a step down of at least 50mm and preferably 150mm from the door sill.
  • Maximum joist centres are 450mm for 15mm sheet and 600mm for 18/24mm sheet.
  • Sheet joints must have a minimum 5mm gap, sealed over a 10mm backing rod with James Hardie joint sealant.
  • Fix to timber with No. 10x50mm Type 17 screws kept at least 12mm from sheet edges and 50mm from corners.
  • Sheet sizes are 2400x1200mm in 15/18/24mm and 3000x1200mm in 15/18mm, with a density of about 1620kg/m3.
  • Compressed sheets cannot be left raw, and a water resistant deck that is not tiled must have a durable coating applied.
