About the Security Torx Bit (Pin Torx)
Security Torx bits have a hole in the tip to clear the pin in a pin Torx security screw, for fitting and removing tamper resistant screws and barrel nuts on signs, playgrounds and public fittings. Hobson calls them post Torx socket bits; they come in T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45 and T50, plain steel, sold individually. What a security Torx bit is
A pin Torx (post Torx) security screw has a six-point star (Torx) recess with a pin standing up in the middle. An ordinary Torx bit will not go in. A security Torx bit has a hole bored in the centre of its tip that clears the pin, so it fits the recess and turns the screw. Hobson says the Torx star increases the torque you can apply, prevents cam out and helps the fastener last.
Our bits are plain steel with a hex shank, sold individually. Hobson also makes the same drive as an L-shaped socket key, linked below, for places a driver will not reach.
Which security Torx bit for which screw
The T size follows the screw's thread size and head, so check both. A #10 self-tapping screw takes T25 with a button head but T20 with a countersunk head, and a #14 takes T27 (button) or T30 (countersunk). Using a security Torx bit
- Match the T size to the screw (table above). A smaller bit will round out the recess.
- Seat the bit fully, so the pin sits inside the hole in the tip, and keep the bit in line with the screw.
- Drive at a steady, moderate speed and stop when the head is snug. Stainless security screws can gall if driven too fast or overtightened; Hobson suggests a slower speed and a molybdenum disulphide based thread lubricant.
- Keep the bits secure. Pin Torx screws stop casual tampering; anyone with the matching bit can still remove them.
Where pin Torx screws are used
Hobson lists its pin Torx screws for outdoor play equipment, fixings in public facilities, and trains and buses, and the barrel nuts for timber connections, playground equipment and furniture. Other common uses are signs, toilet partitions, number plates and anything worth stealing. Order the bit with the screws: without it you cannot fit them, or take them out later.

What is a security Torx bit?
A Torx bit with a hole in the centre of its tip, so it fits over the pin in a pin Torx (tamper resistant Torx) screw. Ours come in T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45 and T50.
What size security Torx bit do I need?
It depends on the screw size and head: for button head machine screws M3 is T10, M4 T20, M5 T25, M6 T30, M8 T40, M10 T45 and M12 T50. Self-tapping screws differ by head, such as #10 button T25 and #10 countersunk T20. The full list is in the table.
What is the difference between pin Torx and post Torx?
Nothing: they are two names for the same drive, a Torx star with a pin in the centre. Hobson calls it post Torx; it is also called security Torx or tamper resistant Torx.
Why will my normal Torx bit not fit?
The pin in the centre of a security screw blocks a solid Torx bit. You need a security Torx bit of the same T size, which has a hole for the pin.
Is there a security Torx key instead of a bit?
Yes. Pin Torx socket keys (L keys) come in the same T10 to T50 sizes, for places where a driver will not fit.
How are the bits sold?
