Key things to remember
The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.
- Made from G300 roll formed structural steel, galvanised Z275 (minimum 275g per square metre, about 20 microns per side). Hobson says it meets AS 1684 Section 8.3.6 wall bracing.
- Sizes: 30mm wide in 0.8mm and 1.0mm thickness, punched in 20m, 30m and 50m rolls, plus a 30m unpunched 0.8mm strap.
- Bracing capacity to AS 1684 for wall heights up to 2.7m: Type A (30mm x 0.8mm) 1.5kN/m and Type B (30mm x 1.0mm) 3.0kN/m. Taller walls up to 4.2m use the Table 8.19 multipliers, from 0.90 at 3,000mm down to 0.64 at 4,200mm.
- Braced wall lengths run from a minimum of 1,800mm to a maximum of 2,700mm.
- Install as X-bracing: fix one end, stretch the strap tight across the panel, fix the second end, then fit one tensioner in each leg and nail the strap to every stud and nogging. Tension each leg progressively and do not over tension, as that reduces the strap's capacity.
- Nail with 30 x 2.8mm or 35 x 3.15mm mechanical galvanised connector nails through the 3mm nail holes; the 6.5mm holes take the standard tensioner (GSTMGFW30, 2.5mm G300 plate).
- Also used for tie-down connections: roof truss to top plate, bearer to post, floor joist to bearer or top plate, and beam to lintel.
Who it helps: Builders and frame carpenters bracing timber walls to AS 1684.
