Threaded Rod Properties: Stress Area, Proof Load and Tensile Load by Class
Hobson's four-page technical data sheet of metric allthread (threaded rod) properties. For each size from M3 to M64 it gives the pitch and stress area, and the minimum tensile stress, stress under proof load, proof load and ultimate tensile load for class 4.6, 8.8 and 10.9 rod, Sampsonrod, Hobrod and brass.
What this covers
- Minimum tensile stress
- Minimum stress under proof load
- Minimum proof load
- Minimum ultimate tensile load
Applies to Threaded Rod (Allthread) and Foundation Stud.
Key things to remember
The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.
- Covers sizes M3 to M64, with pitch and stress area for each (for example M12 1.75mm pitch, 84.3mm²; M20 2.5mm, 245mm²).
- Minimum tensile stress: class 4.6 400 MPa; class 8.8 800 MPa up to M16 and 830 MPa from M18; class 10.9 1,040 MPa; brass 400 MPa, or 380 MPa from M12.
- Sampsonrod has the same figures as class 8.8 and Hobrod the same as class 10.9, both listed from M6 to M64. Brass is listed up to M24.
- Minimum proof load, M12: class 4.6 19.0kN, class 8.8 48.9kN, class 10.9 70.0kN. M20: 55.1kN, 147.0kN and 203.3kN.
- Minimum ultimate tensile load, M12: class 4.6 33.7kN, class 8.8 67.4kN, class 10.9 87.7kN. M20: 98.0kN, 203.3kN and 254.8kN.
- These are minimum material properties for each size and class. The document gives no working loads.
Who it helps: Engineers, fabricators and staff comparing threaded rod grades, or checking the proof or tensile load of a size.
