Stainless Steel Threaded Rod Torque Chart: Class 50, 70 and 80

Hobson's one-page table of recommended tightening torque for stainless steel allthread (threaded rod). For each size from M3 to M39 it gives the torque in newton metres for property class 50, 70 and 80, and Neptune Rod.

What this covers

  • Recommended tightening torque by class
  • Lubrication and k factor

For Threaded Rod (Allthread).

Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • Covers sizes M3 to M39 in class 50, 70 and 80. Neptune Rod has the same figures as class 80.
  • Recommended torque, class 50 / 70 / 80: M10 15.8 / 33.9 / 45.2Nm; M12 27.6 / 59.2 / 78.9Nm; M16 68.6 / 147.0 / 195.9Nm; M20 133.8 / 286.7 / 382.2Nm.
  • The figures assume a k factor of 0.2: burr-free threads with a good quality lubricant such as molybdenum disulphide (MoS2).
  • Stainless fasteners that are not lubricated or coated often seize, and can show k factors above 0.35, so lubricate them.
  • A guide only, for the first tightening of a single assembly on its own.

Who it helps: Fitters and builders tightening stainless threaded rod, especially in marine or food settings.
