Hume Door Construction & Core Types Explained
The core is what decides how a door performs, its weight, how solid it feels, how well it holds sound and heat, and whether it suits a wet area or a bushfire opening. Hollow & lightweight cores
A honeycomb core between two skins keeps the door light and economical. Ideal for internal openings where weight and cost matter more than mass or acoustics.
Honeycomb Core (Hollow Core H1)
A kraft-paper honeycomb core between two primed skins. The lightest, most economical construction, well suited to low-traffic internal openings like wardrobes, pantries and linen cupboards.

Honeycomb Core (Hollowcore X1)
A lightweight honeycomb core for sheltered entries such as covered verandas, pergolas and laundries. The skin is more durable than the internal version, but it is not built for exposed openings or where security matters.

Premium Honeycomb Core (SG) 6mm Skin
A honeycomb core with thicker 6mm premium primecoat skins ("Hollowcore SG", Hume also markets it as Premium Honeycomb Core SG): noticeably better impact resistance and a more solid, semi-solid feel than a standard hollow core, while staying relatively light. Used by the Accent Premium (PRE models, incl. SG15), Sorrento and Linear internal ranges.

Honeycomb Core Large Cell (Moulded Panel)
A large-cell honeycomb core used behind a pressed moulded-panel face, giving the traditional panel look at a light hollow-core weight.

Solid & substantial cores
A solid particleboard, MDF or timber core makes the door heavier, quieter and more stable, the right choice for a substantial feel, better acoustics, or wet and high-use areas.
Solicore Particleboard Core (SCX1)
A solid, water-resistant particleboard core. Heavier and quieter than a hollow core, with better acoustic and thermal performance, a solid-feeling door for main living areas.
Solicore Particleboard Core (SCX1 Moulded Panel)
The solicore particleboard core behind a moulded-panel face, the pressed-panel look with the weight and quiet of a solid door.
Solicore Particleboard Core (SCX1 PCMDF)
A solicore particleboard core with a primecoat MDF face, ready to paint, solid and stable with a smooth, paint-grade finish.
Solid HMR MDF Core (DB)
A solid high-moisture-resistant MDF core. Dense and dimensionally stable, suited to heavier or high-use openings and areas with some moisture exposure. DB is the entrance-door build of this core (Haven, Vaucluse, Linear Entrance); HV is the internal build.

Solid HMR MDF Core (HV)
The same solid HMR MDF core in the HV internal build, used by ranges like Bayview and Humecraft for the most substantial, stable internal doors.

Solid Timber Pine Core (STPC Blockboard)
A solid timber pine blockboard core, a fully solid door with real timber substance behind the face.
Frontier Ultimate Solid Infill Core
A solid infill core for the Frontier Ultimate barn door, adding weight and a more solid feel than the Premium hollow-core version.

Engineered, panelled & specialty
Purpose-built constructions for glazed and panelled doors, and the internal reinforcement that supports locks and hardware.
Engineered Joinery
Laminated timber stiles and rails framing a panel or glass, finished in a real timber veneer or a paint-grade face, the construction behind the joinery entrance and internal ranges.

Hampton Construction
The construction behind the Hampton range, a solid infill with a pressed panel profile and a primed face, ready to paint.

Elite Aluminium Doors
A powder-coated, extruded aluminium frame with a reinforced connecting system joining the stiles and rails. Built for impact resistance and weather exposure, this is the construction behind the Elite Aluminium entrance ranges rather than a timber or MDF core. Added by Hume since their printed construction sheet.

Door Stiffener (HMR MDF)
A moisture-resistant MDF stiffener built into the lock area of hollow-core doors, giving hardware a solid section to fix into.
Fire & bushfire rated
Certified constructions for openings that have to meet a bushfire or fire rating.
Bushfire Resistant Construction (BAL19 / BAL29)
Bushfire-resisting entrance door construction from the Hume BFR range, tested for openings rated BAL19 and BAL29 under AS3959. See our Bushfire Resistant door range. Always confirm the required BAL rating for your site with your certifier.

BAL 40 Construction
A bushfire-resisting construction independently fire-tested to BAL40 (AS1530.8.1 / AS3959), the highest standard Bushfire Attack Level for entrance doors, with 6mm toughened safety glass options. Hume’s BAL40 range is available through Allmat, ask us to quote it. Always confirm the required BAL rating for your site with your certifier.
